HOW A TOTAL STATION HELPS ENFIELD IN A LABOUR SHORTAGE

Good labour is becoming ever increasingly difficult to find and retain. A lack of supply in the labour market has caused a sharp increase in demand. The construction industry’s unemployment is less than 4%, placing it near record lows.

VRCA (Vancouver Regional Construction Association) surveyed their members and learned that the #1 issue employers are suffering from is a lack of skilled labour. See the article here and monthly updates on VRCA’s website. Their predictions expect this problem only to grow worse.

At Enfield, we try to attract skilled labour with our culture, benefits, online presence, and personal development opportunities. However, when competition is stiff and worse labour shortages are imminent, we believe investing in technologies to compensate for fewer workers is a critical decision companies must make.

Enter the Total Station: a tool many contractors use to leverage a small, knowledgeable crew. The Total Station is an optical surveying instrument that uses electronics to calculate distance and angles. It merges the functions of a theodolite with a transit level and electronic distance meter. Enfield uses a total station for all of our foundation layouts, and we would never go back to the old way of laying out footings.

Using a total station turns the job of two or three skilled employees into work for one person. These kinds of technologies and innovations are essential in our current job climate. The total station combined with other innovations is the strategy Enfield will continue to utilize as we all navigate the storm of a continued labour shortage for the foreseeable future.

Nav Gill – Triumph Properties – Construction Manager

Triumph had the opportunity to work with Enfield at our parkade in Abbotsford. I enjoyed working with their team from start to finish, and would recommend that everyone consider Enfield for their multi-family concrete scope.
